The girl screamed. The witch couldn’t hear her over the violent din of her enchantment, but she could see her gaping mouth and her eyes wide with fear. Soon she’d cry, too, but it was all for the best.

Everything the witch did, everything she’d done for the last fourteen years, had always been for the best. Would the girl have preferred living in a stinking old building in a disgusting city with horrible, thieving parents and going hungry as often as not? And by now she would have fallen in and out of love dozens of times.

She’d end up just like her mother, the witch told herself as she watched the tower of earth and stone rise up from the woods. The spell was complete.

“Mother!” Dandelion called, and the witch looked up at her. The girl stood at the tower’s window, her hands on the stone sill. Her face was dirty and bruised, with a fresh cut on one cheek. “What have you done?”

“My plan, daughter,” the witch said. “You’ll be safe there.”

“From what?” the girl shrieked down at her. Her voice, shrill and panicked, sent an electric shiver up and down the witch’s spine.

The witch shut her eyes and clenched her jaw against her senses. Weak, timid, and afraid, the witch thought. A few years in my tower will surely fix that.

“Please!” the girl shouted down to her as the witch turned to walk away. “You can’t leave me here!”

“You’ll be safe there,” the witch said. “Safe forever. You have your violin!”

The witch walked on, and she was halfway back to the house when she finally heard the sorrowful strains of the girl’s violin.
